Journal entry of John Collins Warren, 1846.

Journal entry of John Collins Warren describing an operation he performed at Massachusetts General Hospital, the first demonstrated use of ether in surgery. Reference is made to W. T. G. Morton who administered the ether application and asked Warren to perform the surgery for the demonstration. The procedure was performed on Gilbert Abbot to remove a tumor of the mouth. Includes entries (October 16-December 7, 1846) describing the patient's recovery.

John Collins Warren, surgeon and naturalist, was born in Boston in 1778, the son of Harvard physician John Warren and Abigail (Collins) Warren. He graduated from Harvard College in 1797 and began the study of medicine with his father. From 1799 to 1802 he studied medicine in Paris and London.
